Malaysian business advisory

Why Pulau Strategy

What You Get When You Work With Us

We've tried to be clear about what we offer and how we operate โ€” because the businesses we work with tend to make decisions carefully, and we think they deserve straightforward information.

Core Advantages

Six Things That Matter When Choosing an Advisor

These aren't marketing claims. They're practices and characteristics that we think are worth being explicit about.

Malaysian Regional Knowledge

We understand the practical differences between operating in KL, Kota Kinabalu, and Kuching โ€” not just in theory but through years of advisory work in each context.

Written Deliverables Always

Every engagement ends with a written report. Not a slide deck. Not a verbal summary. A document with observations, analysis, and prioritized recommendations.

Same Advisor Throughout

The person you speak with at the start handles your engagement directly. No handoffs to junior staff partway through.

Strict Confidentiality

NDA as standard. Your business situation does not appear in our case studies, presentations, or any other materials โ€” not even anonymized.

Fixed Engagement Fees

Our fees are set per engagement type and agreed upfront. No hourly billing uncertainty. You know what you're spending before we begin.

No Vendor Affiliations

We don't receive commissions or referral fees. Our recommendations reflect what we believe is right for your business, without commercial interests pulling in another direction.

In Depth

A Closer Look at How We Work

Expertise That Fits the Context

Most of our advisors spent time working inside Malaysian businesses before moving into consulting. That matters because it means we understand things from the inside โ€” the constraints, the decision-making dynamics, the things that don't appear in reports.

We specialize in three areas: cross-border trade within ASEAN, operational coordination across Malaysian states, and coastal industry challenges. We don't try to cover everything.

Advisory team with hands-on experience in Malaysian commerce
Specialization in ASEAN trade regulatory environments
Direct experience with East Malaysia operational contexts
Sector-specific knowledge in fisheries, aquaculture, and marine services
Familiarity with Malaysian export procedures and commercial law

A Process Built Around Your Business

We don't use off-the-shelf frameworks and call them tailored. Each engagement begins with us understanding your specific situation โ€” what you've tried, what you know, what you're uncertain about.

From there, we structure the work to address what actually matters, with regular check-ins so nothing drifts off course.

Scoping conversation before any fee is agreed
Written scope agreement at engagement start
Regular check-ins throughout the engagement
Written findings and recommendations at conclusion
Clear handoff โ€” no open-ended retainers by default

Fees You Can Plan Around

Hourly billing creates uncertainty. You don't know what you're going to spend until the invoice arrives. We charge per engagement โ€” a set fee that covers the defined scope, agreed upfront.

Our fees are MYR 2,890 for cross-border trade advisory, MYR 3,180 for inter-island operations review, and MYR 425 for coastal industry consultation. If scope changes significantly, we discuss it โ€” we don't adjust fees without a conversation.

Fixed engagement fee โ€” no hourly billing surprises
Fee agreed in writing before work begins
Payment structured across the engagement period
No surprise charges or scope creep billing

What Sets Us Apart

Distinctive Aspects of Working With Pulau Strategy

Archipelago Methodology

Our advisory approach treats each client's business as its own distinct island โ€” with its own terrain, connections, and geography. We map before we navigate.

Site Visits Included

For inter-island operations review, site visits to representative locations are part of the engagement โ€” not an add-on. We think it's important to see things directly.

No Selling Into Engagements

We don't use engagements as a way to sell further services. The work begins and ends as agreed. If something else comes up that warrants attention, we'll mention it โ€” not upsell it.

Honest About Fit

We turn away engagements that aren't right for us. If your situation calls for something outside our experience, we'll say so directly rather than take the work and figure it out as we go.
